The Problem With Penny Stock Trading

Most people these days want to earn money fast. This is probably one of the major reasons that so many people are also getting scammed and often lose a lot of money. Sad to say, that the easy money mentality has reached the stock market and has left a lot of people investing unwisely on penny stocks that may often be too risky to begin with. Let us learn how this variety of stocks can actually be problematic to investors.

What Are Penny Stocks?

Penny stocks are stocks that are sold for less than a dollar or, in some cases, less than five dollars for each share. Most of these stocks only have a short operating history and only have a few million dollars in net tangible assets. Typically, these have low market caps, minimal liquidity and are often traded on over-the-counter exchanges.

Why Are Penny Stocks Risky?

What you should know about these stocks is that trading them may be much riskier as compared to regular stocks. After all, with such issues as these stocks having no adequate backgrounds, offer very limited information about the companies, and may often pose huge threats for scams.

Lack of Background

The chances are, if companies are willing to trade stocks in such small amounts, they most probably have very little business history or may have a very negative one. These companies are either just starting out in the business or they may have experienced bankruptcy, thus they resort to selling their stocks at such low prices.

Because there isnt a lot of information available on penny stock companies, there is a very huge possibility that you might be making a bad investment. And of course, you may end up losing more money than you plan on gaining.

Limited Information

For most companies that offer penny stocks, not a lot of information is really available for investors to view online or elsewhere. After all, most exchanges in this market operate on the Over The Counter Bulletin Board (OTCBB), which do not really require thorough reports for public posting.

Without such valuable information, it would be very difficult on the investors part to make the right and objective trade decisions, and this could often lead to unwise guessing.

Bribes And Scams

It isnt common for such stocks to be promoted by people who have been paid to do just that. Perhaps, you have received spam emails that may sound too good to be true, which may encourage you to invest in a particular penny stock. Take in mind those successful companies these days mostly did not start out through penny stocks.

The usual scenario happening that enables bribes and scams is that a company may buy some stock and then spread emails to tell people that a certain stock is doing well in the market. A lot of readers would then respond to this by investing in stocks, causing the price to dramatically shoot up due to supply and demand. After this, the scammer may sell his or her share for a huge amount before the price dramatically goes down again leaving many investors to lose a lot of money.

In conclusion, although there is a lot of potential for growth in very minute sized stocks, there are greater risks involved. And often times, if you are not well acquainted with the business background as well as with the necessary information on how your investment is doing, there is a huge chance for you to get scammed.

And so, if you are new to the whole stock exchange market, make sure that you decide wisely on which type of stocks to invest and do not go after what may seem easy to get you rich. Take in mind that, although penny stocks may be alluring, they may involve huge risks on your part.

Investments and How to Find Them

There are risks involved in all investing. The skill of investing is knowing which risks are worth taking, and which should be avoided. Finding and knowing which risks to take is the essence of good investing and the whole reason that investments can pay such a high reward. It cannot be done without careful research and analysis. You must give yourself every chance to make the right decision. Investing without carrying out sufficient research is like playing roulette. You are giving yourself virtually no chance of covering your investments and avoiding disaster.

There are certain steps you will have to take in order to give yourself a fighting chance of being a successful investor. If you are considering investing in company shares on the stock market, then you should be aware that all publicly traded companies must provide investors and potential investors with access to company financial data. This data is generally available from the company so if you are considering buying into a company, then get access to this information and satisfy yourself that the company is in a good financial state before parting with any money.

Be Aware

If you do research a company, and are taking a look at its financial position, then you should look back two to three years into the past. You probably dont need to go back further than this but if you go back less, there may be important trends in the finances that you will miss. Take special note of the quarterly statements and the revenue and earnings per share.

You should be trying to identify trends in certain figures. While these are no guarantee of what might happen In the future it is undeniable that an upward trend in revenue and profits will be a positive sign to look out for.

Once you have satisfied yourself with the basic financials of the company and that the prospects of making good profits into the future are favourable you will be in a position to consider putting money into the share. There is an ongoing debate over whether its preferable to buy shares that will increase in value, or shares that pay good dividends and the answer to this question must always lie with the individual investor. What must be remembered however is that there is little point in chasing dividends. This refers to the practice of buying a share just before a dividend is expected to be announced. The price of the share will already have taken the dividend into account so you will be paying for it in any case.

Getting Your Feet Wet Begin Investing

If you are anxious to get your investments started, you can get started right away without having a lot of knowledge about the stock market. Start by being a conservative investor with a low risk tolerance. This will give you a way to making your money grow while you learn more about investing.

Start with an interest bearing savings account. You may already have one. If you dont, you should. A savings account can be opened at the same bank that you do your checking at or at any other bank. A savings account should pay 2 4% on the money that you have in the account.

Its not a lot of money unless you have a million dollars in that account but it is a start, and it is money making money.

Next, invest in money market funds. This can often be done through your bank. These funds have higher interest payouts than typical savings accounts, but they work much the same way. These are short term investments, so your money wont be tied up for a long period of time but again, it is money making money.

Certificates of Deposit are also sound investments with no risk. The interest rates on CDs are typically higher than those of savings accounts or Money Market Funds.

You can select the duration of your investment, and interest is paid regularly until the CD reaches maturity. CDs can be purchased at your bank, and your bank will insure them against loss. When the CD reaches maturity, you receive your original investment, plus the interest that the CD has earned.

If you are just starting out, one or all of these three types of investments is the best starting point. Again, this will allow your money to start making money for you while you learn more about investing in other places.

Stabilize Your Current Situation Before You Invest

Before you consider investing in any type of market, you should really take a long hard look at your current situation. Investing in the future is a good thing, but clearing up bad or potentially bad situations in the present is more important.

Pull your credit report. You should do this once each year. It is important to know what is on your report, and to clear up any negative items on your credit report as soon as possible. If youve set aside $25,000 to invest, but you have $25,000 worth of bad credit, you are better off cleaning up the credit first!

Next, look at what you are paying out each month, and get rid of expenses that are not necessary. For instance, high interest credit cards are not necessary. Pay them off and get rid of them. If you have high interest outstanding loans, pay them off as well.

If nothing else, exchange the high interest credit card for one with lower interest and refinance high interest loans with loans that are lower interest. You may have to use some of your investment funds to take care of these matters, but in the long run, you will see that this is the wisest course of action.

Get yourself into good financial shape and then enhance your financial situation with sound investments.

It doesnt make sense to start investing funds if your bank balance is always running low or if you are struggling to pay your monthly bills. Your investment dollars will be better spent to rectify adverse financial issues that affect you each day.

While you are in the process of clearing up your present financial situation, make it a point to educate yourself about the various types of investments.

This way, when you are in a financially sound situation, you will be armed with the knowledge that you need to make equally sound investments in your future.

Investment Strategy

Because investing is not a sure thing in most cases, it is much like a game you dont know the outcome until the game has been played and a winner has been declared. Anytime you play almost any type of game, you have a strategy. Investing isnt any different you need an investment strategy.

An investment strategy is basically a plan for investing your money in various types of investments that will help you meet your financial goals in a specific amount of time. Each type of investment contains individual investments that you must choose from. A clothing store sells clothes but those clothes consist of shirts, pants, dresses, skirts, undergarments, etc. The stock market is a type of investment, but it contains different types of stocks, which all contain different companies that you can invest in.

If you havent done your research, it can quickly become very confusing simply because there are so many different types of investments and individual investments to choose from. This is where your strategy, combined with your risk tolerance and investment style all come into play.

If you are new to investments, work closely with a financial planner before making any investments. They will help you develop an investment strategy that will not only fall within the bounds of your risk tolerance and your investment style, but will also help you achieve your financial goals.

Never invest money without having a goal and a strategy for reaching that goal! This is essential. Nobody hands their money over to anyone without knowing what that money is being used for and when they will get it back! If you dont have a goal, a plan, or a strategy, that is essentially what you are doing! Always start with a goal and a strategy for reaching that goal!

How Much Money Should You Invest?

Many first time investors think that they should invest all of their savings. This isnt necessarily true. To determine how much money you should invest, you must first determine how much you actually can afford to invest, and what your financial goals are.

First, lets take a look at how much money you can currently afford to invest. Do you have savings that you can use? If so, great! However, you dont want to cut yourself short when you tie your money up in an investment. What were your savings originally for?

It is important to keep three to six months of living expenses in a readily accessible savings account dont invest that money! Dont invest any money that you may need to lay your hands on in a hurry in the future.

So, begin by determining how much of your savings should remain in your savings account, and how much can be used for investments. Unless you have funds from another source, such as an inheritance that youve recently received, this will probably be all that you currently have to invest.

Next, determine how much you can add to your investments in the future. If you are employed, you will continue to receive an income, and you can plan to use a portion of that income to build your investment portfolio over time. Speak with a qualified financial planner to set up a budget and determine how much of your future income you will be able to invest.

With the help of a financial planner, you can be sure that you are not investing more than you should or less than you should in order to reach your investment goals.

For many types of investments, a certain initial investment amount will be required. Hopefully, youve done your research, and you have found an investment that will prove to be sound. If this is the case, you probably already know what the required initial investment is.

If the money that you have available for investments does not meet the required initial investment, you may have to look at other investments. Never borrow money to invest, and never use money that you have not set aside for investing!
